Registration Subject to Confirmation (STC)

What is registration Subject to Confirmation (STC)?

Registration subject to confirmation (STC) is a category of registration that may be granted to an experienced teacher who, for valid reasons, has not been able to be meaningfully assessed against the Registered Teacher Criteria within the last five years.  Often this is because the teacher's employment has been casual (they are a relief teacher) or they have been employed for too few hours for their professional leader to be able to undertake a meaningful appraisal against the Criteria.

Depending on an individual teacher's circumstances, registration STC may be granted to teachers who:

Registration STC does not signal that a teacher cannot meet the Registered Teacher Criteria, nor does it signal that there are any competence or conduct issues with their teaching.  Gaining registration STC and a practising certificate means that you are registered as a teacher and are able to be legally employed in a teaching position within the general education system in New Zealand.

Teachers registered STC can apply to gain full registration when they are employed in a teaching position that enables them to be meaningfully assessed against and meet the Registered Teacher Criteria.

What application form do I use?

You can reapply for STC registration and a practising certificate using a TC1 application form

Please note that if you apply for full registration on a TC2 application form around the time your practising certificate expires, you must also reapply for your practising certificate separately using the TC1 application form.  To gain full registration you must have a current practising certificate.
