Registration Policy

The Council's Registration Policy contains all of the relevant requirements, policies and processes relating to registration, many of which have already been in place for a number of years.

These are now presented for the first time together in one overarching document.  We have collated the information together to make it easier for those seeking to join and remain within the teaching profession to understand where they fit in relation to registration requirements.

Background and key changes

In 2008 and 2009, the Council consulted with the sector on issues relating to registration categories, the length of time that teachers should be able to remain provisionally registered, what is defined as a teaching position, what full registration should signal, and what is sufficient for ‘satisfactory recent teaching experience'.

In acknowledgement of feedback received via the consultation process, the following key changes have been incorporated into the Registration Policy:

The Registration Policy includes separate policies that specifically describe how the Council determines teachers

The Registration Policy also signals upcoming change (effective from 2015)

The policy contains a significant amount of information.  Teachers and professional leaders will need to read different sections at different times in their career and work.

The Council is currently developing a web tool to enable readers to easily navigate through the relevant sections of the policy.  This tool will be available via the website by March 2012.
