Consultation on the draft Registered Teacher Criteria

Background

The Council has been seeking feedback on the draft Registered Teacher Criteria (RTC), which describe the criteria for quality teaching to be met by all fully registered teachers in Aotearoa New Zealand. The draft RTC will replace the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions.

The consultation process in 2008 included:

a) a survey for key stakeholders
b) an online survey to a sample of teachers from the New Zealand Teacher Council (NZTC) Register
c) an opportunity for all schools and early childhood centres to respond to a consultation pack.

Consultation with schools and centres

A pack was made available to principals, tumuaki o ngā kura, or early childhood education centre managers for consultation with staff. For information about the consultation pack, email alastair.mclean@teacherscouncil.govt.nz.

The Council sought views on the criteria and key indicators, including the extent to which they:

a) represent the essential knowledge and capabilities for quality teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand
b) are both aspirational and achievable for teachers/kaiako and
c) apply across the range of teaching situations.

The consultation closed on 10 October. The pack comprised three documents:

1) A consultation document (links to 720 kb pdf). Click here to view as HTML.
2) The draft Registered Teacher Criteria.
3) A feedback form (links to 320 kb pdf).  Click here to download as a word document.

The most recent draft of the Registered Teacher Criteria can be viewed here. This draft is also available for download here (links to 80kb pdf).

Stakeholder survey

Key stakeholders were sent a postal survey in early July 2008. This survey is now closed.

Online survey of teachers/kaiako

A randomly generated sample of teachers from the New Zealand Teachers Council register was selected and invited via email to particpiate in an online consultation. This was conducted between mid-July to mid-August.

If you have any inquiries about the overall consultation process please contact Erin Pilcher, Research Analyst (erin.pilcher@teacherscouncil.govt.nz).
