Consultation on the draft Registered Teacher Criteria

Background

The Council is seeking feedback on the draft Registered Teacher Criteria (RTC), which describe the criteria for quality teaching to be met by all fully registered teachers in Aotearoa New Zealand. The draft RTC will replace the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions.

The consultation process in 2008 includes:

a) a survey for key stakeholders (available now - see below)
b) an online survey to a sample of teachers from the New Zealand Teacher Council (NZTC) Register
c) an opportunity for all schools and early childhood centres to respond to a consultation pack (this will available early August 2008).

Stakeholder survey

Key stakeholders were consulted in July 2007. Feedback from this consultation has been incorporated into the draft RTC.

The Council would like your views on the criteria and key indicators, including the extent to which they:

a) accurately represent the essential knowledge and capabilities for quality teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand
b) are both aspirational and achievable for teachers/kaiako
c) apply across the range of teaching situations.

The 2008 stakeholder survey is now open. The survey comprises three documents:

1) An Introductory letter (links to 49Kb pdf)
2) The Draft Registered Teacher Criteria (links to 78Kb pdf)
3) A Stakeholder Feedback form (links to 247Kb rtf)

The Feedback form can be completed electronically and emailed to alastair.mclean@teacherscouncil.govt.nz or hard copies can be posted to:

Alastair McLean, New Zealand Teachers Council, Box 5326, Wellington.

The closing date for feedback is 1 August 2008.

Online survey of teachers/kaiako

A randomly generated sample of teachers from the New Zealand Teachers Council register will be selected and invited via email to particpiate in an online consultation. This will be conducted from mid-July to mid-August.

Consultation with schools and centres

In early August, a consultation pack will be available to principals, and tumuaki o ngā kura or early childhood education centre managers for consultation with staff. To receive a consultation pack, email alastair.mclean@teacherscouncil.govt.nz.

The material for the consultation pack will be available to download from this site in early August.
