Registered Teacher Criteria Workshops, World Teachers Day 2010

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE: 19 April 2010
He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa!
Warm greetings to you all.
In this message there is information about:
- Workshops for implementing the Registered Teacher Criteria
- World Teachers Day Conference October 29-30
Registered Teacher Criteria workshops - please register by April 30
In December I advised you of the timetable for implementing the Council's new Registered Teacher Criteria. This and other supporting information is available on our website http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/rtc/rtcimplementation.stm
I also promised we would provide opportunities for you to gain more information to help implement the criteria successfully with your teachers. Two weeks ago we sent out an email alert inviting you to register for one of the workshops on the Registered Teacher Criteria. In this message I am taking another opportunity to promote these workshops now that you are starting a new term.
We are inviting enrolments from professional leaders or the person in an institution who is mainly responsible for registration of provisional and experienced teachers.
We are also inviting enrolments from advisors who have a role in supporting schools and early childhood education services to apply the criteria for appraisal for registration and / or induction and mentoring of provisionally registered teachers.
In all cases, we ask for only one enrolment per institution. This may alter if demand is less than expected. Workshops begin in the Auckland area on 25 May.
The half day workshops will provide information about the Registered Teacher Criteria, how they can be used and opportunities to discuss and clarify issues in gathering evidence and making judgements based on the criteria. A resource pack will be worked through so you can in turn lead professional development and discussion with teachers back at your workplace. A group of practitioners including principals are helping us to plan the programme and the resources so the workshops will be of maximum value to you.
We have planned a number of workshops in major centres in the expectation of high demand. We will confirm the particular dates and provide details about venues when we have a firmer idea of numbers requesting to register. For this reason we ask you to register interest by Friday April 30th.
To express your interest in attending the workshops and to receive details of dates and locations text "CRITERIA" to 244 (txts cost 20c) or email alastair.mclean@teacherscouncil.govt.nz. Information can also be found on the NZ Teachers Council website at www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/policy/rtc-workshops.stm.
Other opportunities to discuss the Registered Teacher Criteria
As you know, I am always pleased to be invited to your professional meetings to discuss matters related to Teachers Council work. If I am not available, other Council staff are able to provide presentations or workshops on professional or other matters.
World Teachers Day 2010
In the meantime, I ask you to please place the World Teachers Day 2010 Teachers Council Conference in your calendar. We are planning a two day conference this year on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th October. The focus will be induction and mentoring of provisionally registered teachers and we are hoping to secure a renowned international speaker as well as New Zealand experts we have worked with in this area over 2009 - 2010. Opportunities to workshop the new guidelines for induction and mentoring and mentor teacher support will be a feature of the programme. Information about the Conference and how to register interest in attending will be provided in future Director's Messages and on the Council's website.
In conclusion
I wish you all the best for the coming winter term.
Dr Peter Lind
Director
