What does it mean if the teacher education programme I have heard about is not an approved programme?It could be that: It is an outpost or off campus site of an approved institution. You will have to enquire from them. It has not been approved for teacher registration purposes.
What qualifications do I need to begin a teacher education programme?For overseas qualifications, you need to get an evaluation done by NZQA, PO Box 160 Welllington, ph 04 802 3000. New Zealand Qualifications Authority website For diploma or degree programmes you will need to demonstrate certain levels of academic achievement and the ability to cope successfuly with tertiary level study. Each institution publishes a set of its own entry criteria. These are described on the TeachNZ website. TeachNZ website For a one year graduate early childhood, primary or secondary programme you must hold a degree or qualifications equivalent to a degree. The institution has the responsibility for telling potential students which qualifications equate with a degree. If there is any doubt, the institution will contact the Ministry of Education and obtain written confirmation of the degree status of your qualification. In such cases, you should retain a copy of the letter from the Ministry of Education and send this with your registration application to the Teachers Council.
What salary will I be on when I complete my teaching qualification?The Teachers Council does not determine salaries. You need to check this with the Ministry of Education (see above) or with one of the teacher unions: for secondary NZ Post Primary Teachers Association ph 04 384 9964. What if I have a qualification for one sector (ECE, primary, secondary) and want to teach in another?For registration purposes, your teacher registration is valid for any sector. Some employers may employ you with a qualification for another sector. You will need to check with them what you will be paid.
