Whakamanahia Te Reo Māori Research Programme 2008 – 2009

The Council has embarked on a research project to investigate issues in the initial teacher education (ITE) programmes that prepare teachers for Māori medium settings in schools and early childhood education. This project originated from the Council's Māori Medium Advisory Group and aims to enhance Māori language proficiency levels of these graduates. The first report, a description of current programmes and issues, was released in December 2008. The second step will be the commissioning of a literature review and language needs analysis for graduates of Māori medium ITE programmes.

He Tirohanga Hōtaka – An Exploration of Issues and Influences that effect Te Reo Māori Competence of Graduates from Māori Medium ITE Programmes

This research report by Haemata Ltd involved an environmental scan of Māori medium ITE programmes. The report was launched by the Council with a hui of ITE educators and others with an interest in quality provision of ITE programmes for kaiako in Māori medium settings. Key findings of the research highlight a range of practices and issues around establishing and developing te reo proficiency while preparing students for teaching in Māori medium settings.
