DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEDecember 2009 Meri Kirihimete me nga mihi hoki o te tau hou! Seasons Greetings to you all. In this message there is information about:
Registered Teacher Criteria to replace Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions The Council has approved a final version of the Registered Teacher Criteria that have been under development since 2006 and successfully piloted in 2009 in a number of schools and early childhood education settings. The teachers in the pilot found the criteria reflected their view of good teaching and professional practice. They also found the Registered Teacher Criteria useful as a framework for professional learning and development. These findings mirrored the views expressed by teachers and professional leaders in the comprehensive consultation on the draft carried out in 2008. Following the pilot, some minor adjustments were made to the Registered Teacher Criteria and then approved as final by the Council. Next steps In 2010, the main focus will be development and dissemination of resources for using the Registered Teacher Criteria and provision of training for key people working with teachers as the criteria are implemented. This transition year is an opportunity for the profession to familiarise with the new criteria and see how they will fit in with school and early childhood education service processes. Some teachers will begin or continue to work formally with the new Registered Teacher Criteria, particularly if they have been involved in pilot projects during 2009. This is permitted but of course, formal training and resource provision will only become available from the Council over the course of the year. Any teachers continuing or commencing to work with the Registered Teacher Criteria in 2010, who apply to move to full registration or to renew a practising certificate, may do so. The application forms will not change in 2010 and applicants will be deemed to be meeting the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions. In 2011, the Registered Teacher Criteria will be legally in force and should be used by all first year provisionally registered teachers and all teachers registering or renewing a practising certificate that year. In 2012 and 2013, the Registered Teacher Criteria will be used by all provisionally registered teachers, and all other teachers registering or renewing a practising certificate in those years. From 2014, the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions should be completely phased out in schools and ECE services and all teachers should be working with the Registered Teacher Criteria. Training and resources for the Registered Teacher Criteria Information about training programmes will be available early in 2010 and you should also keep an eye on our website for updated information. The Registered Criteria can be accessed from our website at http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/policy/standards.stm Appointment of Deputy Director I am delighted to announce that a new position has been created of Deputy Director. This will enable me to focus more on strategic issues and face to face meetings with members of the profession. The new appointment is Sharon Kerry who will take up her position on 18 January 2010. Registration For any teachers whose practising certificate expires in January or February 2010, it is critical that these teachers apply for registration prior to end of this calendar year. On behalf of the Council, we wish each of you Christmas greetings and a well deserved, restful break.
Dr Peter Lind Director
