DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

August 2009

Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou

Warm greetings to you all.

DEVELOPMENT OF A DRAFT REGISTRATION POLICY

Regional Discussion Workshops

Over the last three months I have been meeting with many of you at workshops held in regional centres from Whangarei to Invercargill. To those of you who attended (over 750) thank you very much. Your discussions and feedback have provided us with a wealth of information. This information is currently being analysed and will be used to help to develop the draft registration policy document. We will be consulting with you on this document during October and November 2009.

The workshops were attended by primary and secondary teachers and principals, head and senior teachers from early childhood education settings and other key interested parties. The purpose of the workshops was to gather your views on some identified issues concerning the registration system. However, the workshops also provided us with the opportunity to outline to you the two other closely allied professional projects that we are currently undertaking. These are:

  • the review of the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions, which has lead to the development of the draft Registered Teacher Criteria, and
  • the Induction and Mentoring Pilot Programme, which arose from the Learning to Teach research, and is trialling the draft Guidelines for Induction and Mentoring of PRTs and for Mentor Support.

Pilots for each of these projects are underway with the final report of the trial of the draft Registered Teacher Criteria expected at the end of Term 3. Once the Council has considered this report and any associated feedback, we will discuss with you the plan of how the Registered Teacher Criteria will be implemented in 2010.

Further information about these projects can be accessed here: http://www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz/policy/projects.stm

Important Date

October through November 2009 – consultation on the draft registration policy document.

I acknowledge that this is a busy time for you all. Your contribution to these projects is valued and I look forward to hearing further from you. You may contact me at peter.lind@teacherscouncil.govt.nz

Yours sincerely

Dr Peter Lind
