Competence Process
The Education Act 1989 provides a process for reviewing teachers' competence. This process takes place in limited circumstances to ensure that teachers are reaching the required level of competence measured against the Satisfactory Teacher Dimensions/Registered Teacher Criteria.
The New Zealand Teachers Council's competency process places emphasis on assisting the teacher to be competent in the future.
When an employer first identifies concerns with a teacher's competence, they will put in place strategies (assistance and personal guidance) within the school setting to support the teacher towards becoming competent. The collective employment agreements give clear guidance on procedures to follow when a teacher's competence is of concern.
